Bobby Gunn update

by Dave Baggs, FightNews Canada

2006-08-14

Bobby "Braveheart" Gunn (15-2, 12 KO's) is currently training for a second chance at making a first impression. The Jordan, Ontario boxer will make his return to the ring on September 16th with his second opportunity to win the IBA Cruiserweight title and to impress upon boxing critics that there is a new force to be recogned with among the world's best Cruiserweights.

"Bobby is training for this IBA World Title harder than any fight before. He is sparring on a regular basis and should complete 100 rounds leading up to fight. Needless to say, he is in the best shape of his life! What's different from the last fight is Bobby changed trainers prior to his last fight, leaving only 3 weeks to work with new trainer Joe Grier. This time Bobby has been in the gym with Joe since May 1st and will complete 12 solid weeks of training for Landberg by Sept 16th. Bobby is working on speed to add to his well known power. He is also working with a nutritionist and is 194 lbs. The IBA weight limit is 190 and we are right where we want to be with 5 weeks to go. Bobby has also been isolated from the public and is completely focused on this fight and what it means to his boxing career". -- Richard King, manager of Team Gunn.

Another change for the IBA title bout will be the referee for the main event. While Fred Boges worked the Gross fiasco back in March, this bout will be handled by the classy Steve Smoger over its duration. The resume of Smoger is an impressive one and the world looks upon him as a "World class ref", something that should ease the minds of both Landberg and Gunn. Should things once again get dicey, Smoger will quickly act and restore order.

The challenge the experienced Landberg (58-11-3, 26 KO's) possesses will be a huge undertaking for Mission Gunn. Should the Canadian be victorious, thoughts go out towards a possible Canadian Cruiserweight super fight with the talented Cowboy Dale Brown.

"Team Gunn would like nothing more than to win this title and come to Canada for our first defense. If Dale Brown is interested, we would welcome the chance to give Dale the opportunity to fight for the title. It would be a real Canadian Super fight!" -- Richard King, manager of Team Gunn..

The Gunn-Landberg IBA title bout, promoted by Rock Solid Boxing, will take place September 16th at the LCO Casino in Hayward, WI. In addition, Mississauga, Ontario's Mike "PrimeTime" Post will see action. His opponent has yet to be announced.
