![]() Sharpe takes aim at Demers by Dave Baggs, FightNews Canada 2009-12-10 It's hard to image what horrors Larry Sharpe went through in order to boil down to the 154lbs limit. While the former Canadian Middleweight champion did have some success as a fighting Jr. Middleweight, even finding himself ranked among the world best by the WBA, Sharpe never really felt comfortable as a 154lber but did what he had to do and took what he was offered. "I've been draining myself the last few years because that's where opportunities were." Sharpe said. "Being from a small market like Winnipeg, you take what you can get." After two consecutive defeats to an ordinary Oney Valdez, Sharpe decided to take his act north of 154. Sharpe added 12.5lbs to his lanky frame for his comeback bout with journeyman Bruce Rumbolz and quickly hammered his foe into submission in a mere 2 minutes and 6 seconds. Last Friday night, Sharpe climed into the ring, this time as a Light Heavyweight, and needed 56 seconds to end Minnesota's Zach Walters night in his most impressive victory to date. "I was expecting to have to apply constant pressure and stay inside on the 6"4 Walters." Sharpe told FightNews Canada. "I pressed early and after some power shots I knew it was going to be a short night. At Super Middleweight I carry a pretty good punch. " Where does the pride of Pine Falls, Manitoba boxer go from here. He has been quoted as saying that he plans to retire next October, an promise made to his family, one he intends to keep. Time is short for Razor but the hard punching left hander has taken aim at another former Canadian champion, in one Sebastien Demers. "I'm still hoping to get a chance to prove myself on Canada's biggest stage like the Bell Centre in Montreal. I've said before that I'm willing to get in there with anyone. I don't like calling people out but I would love to fight Demers. He's had the support, amateur background, GYM contract, picked fights, since day one. Try turning pro at 28 in a market like Manitoba, where you take what ever bone is thrown your way." If you wish to contact the author of this article, email Dave Baggs at FightNews Canada |
