Jean Pascal (27-2-1,16KOs) is making sure he is surrounded by the best team money can buy heading into his showdown versus Lucian Bute (31-1, 24KOs). Already having previously hired strength & conditioning Coach Angel Heredia, Pascal made a surprising hire once again when it was announced at the opening press conference Tuesday afternoon that former P4P king Roy Jones Jr. would be going to training camp with the rest of Pascal’s team.
Jean Pascal’s head trainer Marc Ramsay stated that Roy had been added to the squad mostly due to his knowledge and expertise of the southpaw stance which Bute utilises. Indeed, having faced numerous left-handed fighters throughout the course of his hall of fame career Jones should be well versed in the southpaw tongue as he has faced a left-handed opponent 13 times in 64 career bouts posting a record of 9-4 in those contests. “He’s a specialist of the southpaw style, been there done for so many years. That’s a great asset for me,” claimed Pascal. continue reading
The former light heavyweight champion Pascal has faced southpaw opponents in the past including his signature win over Chad Dawson, therefore the addition of his boxing idol Jones won’t only be a technical addition but a motivational one as well. Jones stated as such before elaborating on his role, “I’m here just to help him get inspired to do better and my main thing is to help him carry himself better over a 12 round period.”
Training camp for Pascal is expected to take place in a private gym somewhere in Nevada, Jones will be in camp with the rest of the team for most of its duration. Will Jones consider lacing up the gloves with Pascal during camp? “I don’t know, maybe if that’s what it takes.” That possibility was shot down not long after by Ramsay who when asked the same question responded swiftly “No, absolutely not. That’s not an option.”
Pascal had met Jones a few years ago during his clashes against Hopkins and both men had expressed their desire for wanting to work together in some capacity; however those plans were tabled until now. Jones involvement will not be restricted to training camp as he is also expected to be in the corner of Pascal on May25th. Not to be outdone, Bute’s trainer Stephan Larouche when asked how he would counter the hiring of Jones by Pascal, motioned towards his cell phone and quipped “I’m calling Joe Calzaghe (who beat Jones back in 2008) the expert versus right-handers.”
